Mustang Seeds of Madison, South Dakota Receives 2023 Acts of Excellence Award from South Dakota Hall of Fame

Madison, SD—On August 22, 2023, South Dakota Hall of Fame CEO Laurie Becvar and Board Director Gerry Likness presented Mustang Seeds CEO Terry Shultz and the Mustang Seeds team with an Acts of Excellence Award at the Dakota Prairie Playhouse in Madison, South Dakota.

The Ray Schultz family founded Mustang Seeds in Madison in 1963. Their mission was to provide high-quality, small-grain seed to area farmers. For more than half a century, the family and the company have remained true to that mission. They provide a range of products that include corn, soybean, alfalfa, pasture grasses, oats, native grasses, cover crops, and sorghum.

Mustang Seeds has added steadily to its product line, and has recently formed a joint venture with another family-owned genetic company, GDM Seeds, based in Chacabuco, Argentina. The connection gives Mustang Seeds access to industry-leading genetics and a broader range of seed products.

“GDM Seeds uses gene editing in its research and production, which results in an improved product that is not classified as a Genetically Modified Organism,” said Mustang Seeds CEO Terry Schultz in an article in the Madison Daily Leader.

In the article, the difference between a publicly traded company and a family-owned business was shared—a publicly traded business lives for the business quarter and families live for generations.

Since its founding, the company has expanded to neighboring states with a marketing footprint from Montana to Wisconsin. The Madison-based company, now overseen by Schultz, pledges to remain focused on its customers, basing its product offerings on customer-choice, as it has since its inception.
